Have you ever tried out archery? Siem Reap is right place to do it. Especially, if you like to get in touch with the local people and escape from the tourist masses, it is a good choice. Only a few tourists know about the club yet.
The Royal Archery Club is located quite close to centre and offers drop-in sessions every day of the week. The club is based a bit of the street, so it is a good idea to take a tuktuk to get there. Otherwise it would be a long walk by foot. Most of the tuktuk drivers will not know the place, because it is not a popular tourist attraction. I asked the tuktuk driver to call the club and asked them how to get to the club.
The sessions are very flexible. You can basically drop-in whenever you want between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm. There is no fixed training schedule yet. I called the club in the morning and they told me I can drop-in whenever I want. When I arrived at the club at early, I was the only visitor apart from the Royal Archery Club team.
After a short warm-up I was ready to try out the different bow types. During the session I learned how to use a sport bow and a traditional Khmer bow. The guys from the club only speak a little English. Contrary to expectation, it was not a problem at all. The team is very friendly and passionate about their sports. They managed to explain me everything even without speaking English fluently. And the end of the session I was able to hit the target with both the sport bow and the traditional Khmer bow.
